Coexisting
Uniqueness and beauty of your hometown
I gained this inspiration in Melbourne. I saw the people’s natural characteristics from
their diversity of different ethnicity, gender, age, and outfits. No one cares what your background is, and what you look like. People in Melbourne treat you as yourself, in terms of your sayings, behaviour and attitude. I feel this country’s coexistence is chaotic but also beautiful. Humans, animals and nature respect each other and have established beautiful harmony in this country. This neat balance creates comfort in people’s rich mind.
I found this Australian characteristic of contrast and coexisting by comparing my hometown Tokyo which is totally different than Melbourne. It is surrounded with standard tall buildings, no green spaces, and people who have strong cultural thinking. This difference gave me the idea of this concept, ‘natural and artificial.’
The most interesting parts of this cloth are the naturally curved lines, a contrasting silhouette showing two different worlds, and the material used.
This top is created only by pre-consumer waste and post-consumer waste, as my second concept gives a new opportunity to waisted commodities; a dress that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
I dyed the original garment with onion peel and blueberries. I wove torn dyed pieces of cloth into onion bag to produce a new textile. Onion peel and discarded blueberries represent the ‘natural’ part of my garment, and a plastic onion bag represents the ‘artificial’ part.
Through the creation of this garment, I want you to realise the uniqueness and beauty of your hometown.
